Founded in 1917 by Chicago business leader Melvin Jones, Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization, comprising over 1.4 million members across 49,000+ clubs in more than 200 countries and geographic areas.

In 1925, during the international convention, Helen Keller challenged Lions to become the "Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness". Since then, sight restoration, hunger relief, youth welfare, and disaster rehabilitation have defined the global Lionistic mission.
